The Confessions (Penguin Classics) Customer Reviews
:- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Annie -- A Gentle and Sensitive Genius. : The Confessions will not appeal to everyone, but if you are like me who likes to temper my everyday reading with history and historical figures you will do well to tackle this one by the great Jean-Jacques Rousseau. ( Reviewed in the United States on June 25, 2015 )
- 2.0 out of 5 stars from Dennis J. Hosier -- BORING : Plodding along in an attempt to finish this drivel before I, in frustration throw it away. This guy was a sniveling, homeless looser in his early years (up to page 168 thus far), a pervert and thief. Maybe his story gets better? At this point I cannot understand why he is such a stand out in western history. Maybe this revelation will come later in his Confessions? I hope so> ( Reviewed in the United States on January 14, 2020 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Eric -- Enjoy. : An honest look upon the life of an 18th Century man, complete with his follies, faults, missteps, and even some of his justifications for his less than proud moments, his loves, his adversaries, his proudest moments and his darkest days; all in his own words. Enjoy. ( Reviewed in the United States on June 4, 2018 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from smallask -- Assigned for English Class : I was given this book as part of the reading list of an english course I was taking in college. However, while reading the book, I came to appreciate it and continue reading it purely out of a personal need to finish it, and with less care of whether or not I was mandated to read it. The book is entertaining and the prose brilliant. ( Reviewed in the United States on June 15, 2012 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from pirateninj4 -- Great inside look at one of histories most important intellectual figures : Hard to read at times, the names of places and people run together a lot. But the book was a wonderful read and it was interesting reading something that detailed the life of an intellectual in France in that time. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 6, 2019 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Fran -- Beautiful Edition : This edition is gorgeous, and the text is still as beautiful as it was when I first read it. I would reccomend this book to anyone. Truly anyone. Rousseau has such an uplifting voice, no matter what he is talking about. This is a book about what he is ashamed of, however, Rousseau presents it in such an optimistic way. This is a must read book. ( Reviewed in the United States on January 9, 2013 )
- 3.0 out of 5 stars from ES -- Not the Penguin translation : This Kindle version was advertised on the same page as the Penguin edition, but it's actually a 220 year old anonymous translation with archaic wording. It is serviceable, but not what was advertised. ( Reviewed in the United States on June 6, 2020 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Elperrocanservero -- Life : Excellent autobiography, love the richness in detail of all his memories and his impartiality when describing events in his life (although you can’t ever be sure with impartiality) regardless, a great, life lesson like read. ( Reviewed in the United States on February 1, 2019 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Varna B -- A lively original : The first volume of this is a wonderful read, - the beginning of the genre really (apart from St Augustine). The second part is more of a plod and a tad tedious in places but worth pursuing as, after all, it is in that latter period that he achieves all that made him subsequently so famous and gave him such a significant place Western philosophy and educational theory. It is full of self criticism but also a great amount of self justification and the role of women in his life is revealed to be crucial and sometimes very odd. I felt a bit more sympathetic of his infamous treatment of his children after his, albeit justificatory, explanation. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 25, 2015 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Lee Hilton -- Good book : Great read. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 4, 2019 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from joseph o'kane -- Five Stars : Great Kindle Edition of a Great Man xx ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 4, 2016 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Dorothy -- Very good book : Very good book ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 18, 2019 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from robert singer -- Five Stars : Very Pleased ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 27, 2015 )
