  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Lee Burnham -- Questionable Assumptions : Many comments about how this book is well written and well researched. Well written yes but I keep seeing statements about things that he accepts as facts that are still disputed or in question. He accepts that Edward essentially gave the throne to William. No comments about Queen Emma's role in bringing Edward to England before the death of the last Danish king. When I see so many statement of fact that I know are at often questioned or unresolved I wonder about the veracity of other issues with which I am not familiar. Earl Spencer tells a great story but I just don't see him as a careful historian. ( Reviewed in the United States on March 30, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Robert FisherTop Contributor: Anime -- In one night, a great king's hopes were shattered : I have read about the wreck of the White Ship, a famous disaster of medieval times, and was seeking a book on the subject. Charles Spencer does provide a good account of what happened November 25, 1120, when the heir to the English throne and many court notables perished. This is the middle part of the book. First he goes into the career of King Henry I, a younger son of William the Conqueror, who seemed to have limited prospects compared to his older brothers but Henry rose up to take the English throne and become a power figure in Europe. He was also one of the medieval world's great lovers, fathering over twenty children, but only two were legitimate. When his sole legitimate son died in the 1120 shipwreck, that created the situation that takes up the last third of the book; Henry's death in 1135 ushered in almost two decades of anarchy and civil war as his daughter and nephew vied for control of the kingdom. Spencer relates the saga with a good pace and does well handling the large cast and complicated and changing alliances. The White Ship is a very engaging book about a mighty king and the one horrible night all his hopes for the future were shattered. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 23, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from ConstantReader -- Amazing. : "The White Ship" is about the accident that changed the course of history: on 25 November 1120 Henry I's son and heir, William Adelin, drowned on the White Ship together with some 300 other people. His death led to a succession crisis and a period of civil war in England known as the Anarchy. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 27, 2020 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Michael N. Graham -- English history -- a well written account of an amazing event : Spencer's book takes the reader through a well detailed journey of an event most have no idea of in its impact on the crown of England. From William the Conquer to the beginning of the Plantagenet dynasty, this one event had such profound consequences. A great story. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 4, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from roberta yates -- Spencer is a great writer. Wonderful book : This was the Titanic of the 12th century. Perhaps worse, as it impacted the country in ways that reverberated for years to come. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 9, 2021 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Patty -- Not too bad : The book is a little dry perhaps, but if you like this period as I do, it’s not too bad. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 7, 2021 )
  • 2.0 out of 5 stars from Viking2020 -- Dull and confusing : I read a lot of medieval history written for popular audiences (like Alison Weir's books) and this is a dud. Don't be fooled by the exciting opening. After that it's a mind-numbing assemblage of names, castles, marriages, battles without a clear narrative thread and very little detail or color when it comes to the period itself. The rave reviews from England fooled me. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 15, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Mr George R I Clarke -- A Great & Enjoyable Read : This book is a history of the Norman Kings of England including the origin and brief history of the Norman Dukes of Normandy. William the Conqueror and the invasion of 1066 forms the background to the book and is briefly covered. That well known story is dealt with in detail in numerous other books. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Desdemona -- You get more than the title implies. : Anyone looking only for the story of the White Ship will find there is rather more to this book. Certainly, Henry l's family tragedy acts as the hub around which the rest of the action revolves, but the history stretches from William l to the first Plantagenets with a few appropriate European tangents. This is a period which greatly interests me, and I found Charles Spencer's style surprisingly accessible and easy to enjoy. I may have a look at some of his other books. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from TINA -- Fascinating - an early if not first drunk driving case : This was excellent. So much detail about the important people who were on the ship and lost that night. A bit more than I wanted about the whole Norman ancestry and connections, but useful to refer back to whenever I return to this time. Such a tragedy, and it vanished from view over the centuries. This book is a good overview of what was lost and the whole messy civil war after Henry 1 died. And what poetic justice that the one survivor was a butcher still owed for the meat he sold these adventurers. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 11, 2020 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from CBS -- Dim Era, Good History : I did worry a bit that Earl Spencer might be trading on his lost sister's fame, but no: he can write and he knows his history. And Charles Spencer has chosen an incident and tragedy that is both well-known and little-known -- if that makes sense. It was the tragedy and mishap of the millennium, almost. The whole succession to the throne of Henry I, along with associated supporters and hangers-on, was lost at a stroke. British, Irish and European history was changed at a stroke. And yet, it's hard to find much about the sinking of the White Ship, at least in popular literature. All I had previously read about it was in the historical fiction of Elizabeth Chadwick. There is room therefore for a proper historical treatment of the event and its era. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 11, 2020 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from mark eliot -- A First Class History Book : I really recommend reading this excellent history book. As a monarch Henry 1st was one of the best we had, he wasn't as exciting as some, but was was so much better at running the show! When you look at how many recent biographies have been written on Edward II or Richard III, the neglect of the first Henry is shocking. But no more, this is narrative history at its best, it reads exactly as I like my history, with the story to the fore. It was relaxing, a page turner and showed the dynamics and personalities of the time. I have nothing but good to say about this. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 16, 2021 )
